Haiti 2012

In case anyone would like to help this trip, or would like to know what we will be doing, here is my support letter for our Haiti trip in June.

Dear Friends, Family, and Fellow Believers:

Last year, a group of eleven people traveled to an orphanage in southern Haiti called the Hands and Feet Project. During the week we were there, we witnessed poverty, disease, and overcrowding. We heard stories of abandoned children, natural disaster, and the uncertainties and isolation of missions work. We felt tangibly the confusion of a country wracked by hopelessness and overwhelming difficulty. In the midst of it all, however, we experienced something more. We witnessed the hope of future orphanages and clean water, heard stories of unity and compassion for children left behind, and felt tangibly the love of God for the people of Haiti through a group of unified people whose goal is to serve him.

It was these experiences of hopefulness that left many of us changed, and it is because of this hopefulness that I am writing. Along with several others, I am returning to the Hands and Feet orphanage to support the work of the missionaries there as they continue to care for the orphaned children of Haiti. Specifically, we will be bringing needed supplies to the orphanage; supporting the staff with painting, construction, landscaping, or other needed work; visiting sick children in a nearby hospital; and spending time with the orphanage children. My personal job will be to document the trip for us.

To do these things, however, our team needs your help. Each of us must raise $2,000 for travel, food, and other expenses. To help, Quail Lakes Baptist Church has established a support fund account in our name. If you would like to contribute, you would simply write a check to “QLBC” with the words “Haiti 2012 Team” in the memo line. More important than this, please pray for our safety and for the children we will serve during the week. Evil, According to Republicans and Democrats

Please note that the following thoughts are only my observations. Please consider the evidence you see in the behavior of both parties for yourself. In our politically polarized climate, I was thinking about how Democrats and Republicans are different, and where those differences come from. Democrats seem to place more hope in institutions, and seek to reform those institutions when there is something wrong in society. Hence, there is more willingness to levy taxes to offer more social services as a support to those with less than others. They see the state as a way to equalize society. Thus, evil, to Democrats, seems to be a social issue: if there is a problem in society--poverty, racism, climate change, etc.--it is a problem with the structure of society and must be addressed as such: repair the system, and you will solve the problem. They are generally accepting of a larger state bureaucracy because they believe that increased accountability within a state structure will prevent evi...

Ghosts

Exercising at a gym seems to be pretty important in our culture, but it's kind of weird to see the social dynamics when you're there. Usually, if you're running an errand, you see others doing the same thing, going about their days and focusing on what's in front of them. The same thing happens at the gym, only everyone is relatively stationary. They don't really go anywhere, except from one machine or area to another. One might think this lends itself to lots of interaction between members, especially since they're all there for the same purpose, but it isn't true. Not only do people generally avoid talking to one another, but they also avoid even looking at one another. It is as though there is no one else there, even though there are dozens on any given day.
